Just learned of the death of my Principal, my teacher and my friend.
Being your tour guide on that trip to Kenya, especially crossing Lake Victoria in a boat built for twenty carrying with hundreds other passengers was memorable.
Keeping your family in my prayers.
Thanking God for your life both here and there.

This message is very late but I have only just learned of Ivor's death. I was a student at the Margaret Beaufort Institute from 1994 to 1998 and lodged in Wesley House during Ivor's prinicpalship. Ivor was unstinting with his tutorial help and a great inspiration to me. Both Ivor and Kathleen were so kind in the welcome they extended. I have many fond memories of the time I spent there and still regard myself as an 'honorary Methodist'. I shall pray for him.

In memory of a wonderful childhood friend who was very competitive, intellectually motivated, and with the faith and caring nature of his father. A source of inspiration to his friends with his intelligence, his shear ability to have gained so much knowledge, to write, to teach and to both play, create and enjoy music.

The members of the English Church (Anglican) in Heidelberg, Germany extend their sincerest condolences to Kathleen, Elizabeth and Michael. Ivor and Kathleen joined our congregation about 15 years ago, when they started coming to Heidelberg regularly. Ivor was always working on a book and keen to spend hours in the university library. However, he took time off to accompany Kathleen on journeys of discovery in the beautiful surroundings of Heidelberg and soon got to know all the best routes to the castles along the Neckar River and fine walks.
Rev Dr Ivor Jones was a popular preacher in our church, notably for the Methodist Covenant Service in January, which has become a regular feature, and is also conducted by our Anglican priests. His sermons were always delivered without notes and were both eloquent and inspiring, gripping in their spirituality and profound biblical knowledge. He represented for us the desired link with Methodism and, more broadly, the ecumenical movement. He was strongly commitment to the Society for New Testament Studies, which led him to meet so many Catholic and Orthodox scholars in southern and eastern Europe. A polyglot, Ivor was particularly pleased to be able to contribute to the new French translation of the Gospel of Matthew. And though he was such a humble person, Ivor was always ready to give a thoughtful opinion on issues of church life and faith.
Many church members at our Liebfrauenberg (Alsace) retreat in March 2016 will remember with delight how he sat down and played the organ at the drop of a hat.
To conclude, verse 3 of a hymn Ivor wrote himself (singable to Love Divine):
Word that ends our long debating,
Love of God which sets us free,
Through your body recreating
life as life is meant to be,
make us humble in believing,
and believing, bold to pray:
‘Lord, in us your aim achieving,
come and reign in us today!

It's difficult to put into words the way that Ivor influenced and inspired me during my time at Wesley House. As others have said - he was a fine scholar, a great encourager, a wonderful musician and a lovely man. His sense of humour was tremendous, and I have very fond memories of him creased up with laughter at the college review, even when the sketches or songs were about him (which they often were!).
There is a generation of Methodist ministers whose lives and work have been greatly enriched by Ivor's careful tending of us in the formative years of our ministries. I thank God for the privilege of having known him.
My love goes out to Kathleen, Michael, Elisabeth and the rest of the family at this sad time.

Wesley House, Cambridge, where Ivor was Principal from 1984-1999, was saddened to hear of Ivor's death on 7th April. Ivor will be remembered at Wesley House, in the Cambridge Theological Federation and in the Faculty of Divinity as a New Testament scholar, a gifted musician and linguist, and as one of the last real polymaths; but to his students Ivor not only offered his academic gifts, but his intelligent faith, his indefatigable energy and his wicked sense of humour. Many revue sketches were written and performed in his honour and many a fancy dress party featured his most creative efforts; these we will remember alongside the organ voluntaries after chapel, the preaching in which he set himself on fire that we might watch him burn, and the passion with which he defended the association of the college with the University of Cambridge.
Ivor may you rest in peace and rise in glory.

We we very sorry to hear of Ivor's passing. He was a lovely encouraging man and a great help to me both in Bristol, and later on in Cambridge where he and I sought to develop a good relationship between the local Ministerial Training Course and Wesley House. I remember making music with him, and Maureen has memories of the Index to Hymns and Psalms which she helped him with!
Our love to Kath, to Elizabeth adn to Michael.
